If only Eve sinned?...Let me re-phrase the question. Would Jesus come to Earth to save just one person? What might have happened if Adam resisted the temptation to eat the
forbidden fruit Eve brought to him? Consider this scenario;

Eve takes the forbidden fruit and eats. She enthusiastically approaches Adam and tells him about the talking serpent in the garden. She reaches out her hand to show Adam the delicious fruit. She takes a bite, proving that she can eat the fruit and still live, then reaches out her hand to his. But Adam remembers God’s strict commandment; “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

Not deceived by the temptress, Adam considers his choices: trust God and stand back from Eve or eat the fruit and join her in death. After moments of indecision Adam takes another step backward, then hangs his head. He is overcome by an emotion he has never experienced before. Tears trail down his face as he ponders living without his beautiful wife Eve. He is at a loss for words, yet manages to say, “I am so sad and sorry.”

When Heaven determines that Adam is absolutely firm in his decision, God intervenes. Eve’s hand begins to fall as she watches the scene. The fruit drops to the ground as the truth dawns upon her. She is lost! The Creator’s eyes look upon her guilt ridden face. Eve would like to turn away but she cannot turn away. She watches Adam’s arms are tightly wrapped around his Creator and his tears are flowing freely like a child.

The situation calls for an immediate separation between Adam and Eve. She is escorted out of the garden by the Creator and her heartbroken husband. Angels with flaming swords guard the entrances to the garden to keep her from re-entering. What a sad day it has been for all of Heaven to witness. The banishment of Eve would have prevented her the ability to reproduce. The billions born to this world would have been spared the great heartache that has been set in motion since Adam and Eve rebelled against God.

The years pass as Eve adapts to her life outside the garden of Eden. Everyday she sees the brightness of God coming down and returning to heaven. She quickly learns to hide from the light. God’s brilliant presence is now too bright for her to see. She knows that the Creator and Adam daily walk together and she is left out. Does Adam still love and miss her? Has God created a new mate for him? Some days she can bear her feelings of abandonment, other days she curses God. Taking responsibility for her past has been very difficult.

As Eve looks at herself in the reflective pools she can see the effects that sin has taken on her once beautiful face.  The struggle with depressed feelings and guilt would have been immense. At times her resentment towards Heaven would overcome her spirit to continue on.

One day Eve notices that the daily visits to the garden of Eden have stopped. She wonders if Adam has been taken to heaven. She is surprised by a visit from an angel informing her that she is going to have a Child. “And you shall call his name Salvation and He shall save you from your sins.” Eve learns that her Creator is now a child living inside her. He is coming to show Eve how to overcome her sins so she can be returned to the garden, if she is willing.

Eve has new hope! She is going to have someone to talk to. Someone that she can care for. And greater than all of this, someone who will save her from the curse of death!  How strange a thought it must have been to think that her Creator would desire to come this close to her again.

Eve does not feel forsaken now. For years she finds her happiness in raising her little one to

become a man. Teaching him how to talk, teaching Him about the animals He once created. As their relationship grows, she confesses to Jesus her great mistake and the reason why He had to come. Though His life was forever changed the moment He came from Heaven, Jesus did not complain about the circumstances He was born into.

Eve’s greatest joy was found in walking and talking with Jesus. Now that she has seen her Creator in human form, the resentment she harbored towards His justice for many years disappears. She realizes that He is willing to do anything for her daily happiness and well being. The glow of joy begins to return to her countenance.

One day, as Eve and Jesus are walking together, they sense a stillness around them. The birds of the air turn silent as they see the sky above them begin to darken. Eve turns towards Jesus and notices he is no longer beside her. He is sitting and does not look well. She sees blood droplets forming upon his forehead, He is praying “Father if it is your will take this cup from me.” He informs Eve that the time has come for Him to pay the penalty for her sins so that she can continue to live.

Eve takes hold of Jesus and begs Him not to go though with it! Dark clouds form around them, lightning flashes around His suffering body. The reality of her great sin consumes her as she sees His suffering. As the terrifying hours continue, she sees the agony expressed on His face. Great loneliness can be heard in His voice as she hears Him cry, “My God why Have you forsaken me” (see Mark 15:34)?

She realizes that her son is feeling the full force of eternal rejection, the WRATH OF GOD! of which she has experienced only a portion. Eve drapes herself over her suffering son as if to protect him from the cold winds of divine punishment. His body trembles upon the ground. Then at last, He cries out triumphantly, “It is finished!...Father into thy hands I commit my spirit” (see John 19:30). A great earthquake sweeps over the scene and it is done. The clouds recede and light begins to shine upon the lifeless form of Eve’s beloved child, her Creator, and Redeemer.

Dear friend, It was not the nails that killed Jesus in Jerusalem two thousand years ago. The events surrounding the cross were humanities cruel response towards His great sacrifice. His death was the result of Heaven’s anger towards Jesus as He stood in our sinful place. “The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

Oh what a price that was paid for humanities greatest mistake, rebellion against the expressed will of God! His physical and spiritual laws are so perfect, so exact, that they allow no tolerance for even one instance of disregard. If God allowed the persistent rejection of just one commandment,  it would result in the eventual collapse of His government.

The decision to rebel could have come from any intelligent life form in God’s Universe. Jesus has always stood poised to set Himself as the example to every citizen in the Heavens, showing what would become of any being who knowingly opposes the Law of God. Behold the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8).

Friend, I implore you to walk with Jesus day by day. Confess your sinful ways to Him and learn from His life. Only Jesus can change the rebellious attitudes of your heart. Even if YOU were the only one who had tasted of the forbidden fruit, you would be well worth His decision to stand in your place. The fabric of eternity will be incomplete if you are left out of Heaven. Jesus simply cannot bear to see you suffer Heaven’s wrath as He has suffered. Know Jesus!

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (John 17:3)
